A very worthy companion to its Watervale stablemate, the Skilly is a single vineyard Riesling from the Woodvale vineyard positioned in the Skilly Valley near Penwortham. Its cooler location reflected in its green apple and pear flavours, the hint of lychee and its piecing natural acidity. Hand picked and using free run juice only, it’s drinking perfectly now but will further reward careful cellaring for another 25 years.

The Skilly 2016 has all the expected Clare riesling traits with great apple and lemon, and an attractive gingery spice.

Woodvale is the personal wine project of noted winemaker Kevin Mitchell.
Excellent flavour here though quite a lot of spritz too, almost to a distracting degree. Lemon, lime and blossoms of the two. Almost a lemonade character here. It’s fluid, even generous, though it’s dry and well-sustained to close. If you open a bottle now give it a quick double-decant.
